Mapdig

Pull business data off the map and into a table

A map is a picture of a database. Mapdig skips the picture and gives you the database rows for the area you name.

Under the hood, your search becomes two lookups. First the area: Mapdig asks OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service which boundary matches your place name. Then the businesses: it sends a query to the Overpass API for every shop, office or craft with the tag that matches your category word, such as amenity=pharmacy.

We map more than 150 everyday business words to those tags, so pharmacies, chemists and drugstores all work. If your word is not on the list, Mapdig looks for it inside business names instead. The categories page lists every word we know.

Each result keeps its OpenStreetMap link, so you can open the entry and fix a wrong phone number for everyone. The services we call are free public ones, so we cache results, queue requests and send a proper User-Agent. That keeps them available for you and for everyone else.

In three steps

  1. Name the category and the area.
  2. Check the matched tag in the results line.
  3. Export the rows.
